MURFREESBORO SYMPHONY SPOTLIGHTS ‘OUR VERY OWN’

The Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra today announced its line-up for the 2010-2011 season, Our Very Own, featuring guest conductors and musicians with roots in Middle Tennessee.

“Our Very Own will be an exciting year full of surprises,” share Birdie Ann Donnell, president of the board of the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra. “We’ll have more than a dozen public performances this year, not including our Youth Outreach Program which will visit nearly 30 schools.”

Another change this year is the symphony’s choice to utilize the influence and experience of guest conductors from across the region. Three guest conductors will take the stage with the symphony this yearResident Conductor of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Campamento Internacional de Musica Pochote, Costa Rica; Jospeh Hermann, Director of Bands at Tennessee Technological University; and Kelly Corcoran, assistant conductor of the Nashville Symphony.

“These conductors are well-respected in the world of professional orchestras, we are fortunate to bring their influences to Murfreesboro. We are certain our audience will appreciate the choices of programming and will feel challenged with the combination of classical and popular music.”

Our Very Own will also feature two small ensemble concerts performed by world-class musicians. Nicholas Zumbro, an accomplished and celebrated pianist will perform with a small string ensemble in October.

“Our audience has requested countless times to include the magnificent organ at First United Methodist Church in our programming. This year we’ve invited noted organist Andrew Risenger to perform in February.”

Celebration Under the Stars, the city’s annual Independence Day celebration will be conducted by local symphony musicians and band directors from Murfreesboro.

The symphony will host its 2nd annual golf tournament on August 19, 2010 at Indian Hills Golf Club in Murfreesboro. Player slots and sponsorship opportunities are still available for reservation by calling the symphony office.

The Guest Conductors
Joseph Lee is currently the Resident Conductor for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and Music Director and Conductor of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra. Mr. Lee is Principal Conductor of the Campamento Internacional de Musica Pochote (Costa Rica), Music Director of the TN Valley Music Festival, Director of Music Ministries at East End United Methodist Church (Nashville) and has been a regular guest conductor at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. Beginning in January, Mr. Lee will serve as Adjunct Professor of Orchestra at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music for the Spring 2011 semester.

Joseph Hermann – Joseph Hermann is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN. He has also served as director of the Pride of Arizona Marching Band at the University of Arizona, an Assistant Director of Bands and a Director of the Marching Hundred at Indiana University and Director of Bands at ETSU. In 1996, Hermann was elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association and served as a member of its Board of Directors

Kelly Corcoran – Kelly Corcoran has served as assistant conductor of the Nashville Symphony for three years conducting the Symphony’s classical and pops series. She also serves as the primary conductor for the orchestra’s education and community engagement concerts.. Corcoran has a number of accolades to her credit. In 2009, she made her successful South American debut as a guest conductor with the Orquesta Sinfonica UNCuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. She has developed a reputation for exciting, energized performances.

The Featured Artists
Nicholas Zumbro – A pianist whose embrace of a wide and unusual repertoire has earned him international acclaim, Nicholas Zumbro has concertised throughout the USA and in Europe, as well as in China, Russia and Mexico. A prolific composer as well as pianist, Mr. Zumbro’s opera “Kassandra” was given its world premiere in Athens in 1990.

Andrew Risenger – Andrew Risinger is an Adjunct Instructor at the Belmont University School of Music and serves as Organist and Associate Director of Music at West End United. He has appeared as organ soloist with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and the Illinois Symphony Orchestra.
