Google’s Groupon Killer
Surely you’ve by now heard of Google’s attempt to overtake Groupon with its more integrated product, Google Wallet. The concept is great and its an incredible move to rub into Andrew Mason’s face the snub to Google’s pricey purchase offer earlier this year.
Who can kill the fastest growing company ever? Well, depends on who you ask. Most will say Google is the only one capable of doing this. I say (with love as I have proven to be a Groupon advocate), anybody could do it. Groupon is simply one of those companies that has grown because of sheer dumb luck – and with the right ambition and PR machine behind me, I could be a Groupon killer.
I agree that Google has the most advantages, but its not like Google is entering the corporate battle of the century.
This is a hype-v-strength battle and Groupon will lose.
The question is:
How will Google Wallet effect the Daily Deals game?
Just like SM, the playing field became over-saturated and people have started to streamline. Right now Groupon and Living Social are the two major players with a slew of local, regional and some national programs nipping at their heels. But advertisers gravitate toward these two sluggers because of the breadth of audience they deliver, and the consumer finds the most successful budget busters in the two heavyweights because advertisers’ use push bigger bargins in an attempt to compete on the bandwagon. Small businesses will try them all but will usually pledge loyalty to LS or Groupon because of the bigger numbers at play.
The Name Game:
Groupon has become Kleenex, the name to describe all Daily Deals. When the new kid on the block weighs three hundred pounds, he sure can shift his weight around, but will Wallet become the next “Coke” – or will Google actually face the brand struggle and Groupon lose the battle of popularity, but win the name game? And furthermore, where does Living Social find itself? Lets not forget about that stealthy train!
